Well known for its coffee production and rich history, Brazil grows around a third of the world’s coffee and is the largest coffee producer. Coffee was introduced to Brazil in 1720 in the southern state of Parana and legend has it that at that time the Brazilian government had wanted a cut of the worlds coffee production and sent Lt.Col. Francisco de Melo Palheta to French Guiana on the pretence of mediating on a border dispute, however that is a story that will serve too long for this description but might go for a very interesting google search for any fellow coffee lover.

Apart from its yellow exterior which is different from other typical varietals, the Yellow Catuai is known for its sweetness and is a specialty grade coffee, sourced from the Pantano Estate in the Cerrado region of Brazil. The harvesting process starts with a machine that picks the berries once they have ripened enough, they are then separated to ensure more uniformity and consistency before the drying process begins, which takes place on patios for 7 – 10 days. The estate in which all of this takes place covers an area of 550 hectares and more than 300 of those hectares are reserved for permanent natural forest reserves – six times more than is required under Brazilian law.

The farm supports a local school, funds training for its staff and provides full health care, which only adds to the great strides the country has taken in the last few years towards lifting millions of their people across the whole country out of poverty.
